Postbiotics: The hottest trend in 2022?

In the midst of a global pandemic, an increasing number of consumers are seeking food and beverages that offer better health benefits. There is growing consumer awareness of postbiotics, according to Lumina Intelligence, postbiotics have become the fastest growing area in terms of gut health Google searches, with a nearly 1,300% increase from 2019 to 2021 [4].

Prebiotics, probiotics, synbiotics have been widely used in the “biotics” field, however, the term “postbiotics” has greatly attracted attention from academia and industry in recent years. With the development of postbiotics research, it seems to revolutionize the nutraceutical industry.

What are postbiotics?
Postbiotics are undoubtedly the most discussed topic in the nutraceutical industry nowadays. The term 'postbiotics' is increasingly found in the scientific literature and commercial products. Common postbiotics include nutrients such as vitamins B and K, amino acids, and substances called antimicrobial peptides which inhibit pathogen growth, and post-biomass such as short-chain fatty acids help healthy gut bacteria thrive [2][5].

In response to the increasing use of the term "postbiotics" in scientific literature and commercial products, the International Association for the Science of Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) defined postbiotics as “preparation of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that confers a health benefit on the host” [5].

Why is the postbiotics gaining huge attention?
Postbiotics play a vital role in the immune system. They not only improve the protection of the immune barrier but also improve the composition of intestinal flora. Research demonstrated that postbiotics have immune regulation, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-hypertensive properties. It also has the functions of directly regulating immunity, improving overall health and relieving the symptoms of various diseases [1][3]. Moreover, the scientific community is constantly discovering further postbiotic applications for other health benefits.

In addition, postbiotics are inactivated microorganisms. They are more stable than probiotics, which is sensitive to temperature and not easy to store. Therefore, they not only break through the limitations of probiotics but also expands the flexibility of product applications, such as beverages, baked goods, lozenge dietary supplements that would otherwise be unsuitable for live bacteria [6].
